glClear - flicker

I've seen some posts here suggesting double buffering "is handled automatically". That's great, except if I have a call to glClearBuffer in the OpenGLDraw (using WPF here) my screen just flickers the objects... I only have this one call to clear the buffers, and it's prior to drawing the objects. Taking the call out (and calling it once at startup of the app) fixes it (but of course for anything meaningful I need to be able to clear the buffer).
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
